In 1983, Burichang Thana with 15 unions was transformed into a development circle. It was established in 1970 as a full-fledged and independent police station. In 1986, another police station named Brahmanpara was formed with 6 unions of this police station. With the remaining 6 unions, Burichang Thana made its debut as an upazila on 15/04/1983.
Varella Union was divided into two in 2016 through elections, then the two unions were renamed North Varella Union and South Varella Union. At present there are 9 unions in Burichang upazila.
